On 15 September 2026, The Four Elements, an exhibition by Pavel Koichev, one of Bulgaria’s most recognisable sculptors, opened at the Sofia City Art Gallery. The exhibition is one of the season’s major cultural events and is open to visitors until 8 November 2026.
The exhibition was made possible with the support of Geotrading AD and Dr Eng. Ivan Vutov, Chairman of the Board of Directors. The Four Elements is Pavel Koichev’s 42nd solo exhibition and is the result of eighteen months of intensive work. Created specifically for the galleries of the Sofia City Art Gallery, it comprises four thematic sculptural installations featuring more than 30 figurative elements.
The idea of the four elements, known since the time of the ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles, is explored through themes that have long held an important place in Koichev’s work, including form, the creation of form and metamorphosis. Together, the four elements tell a story of movement and change in nature and human life, while the gallery space itself becomes part of the artistic experience.
Pavel Koichev was born in Sofia in 1939 and holds a distinctive place in Bulgarian sculpture. His works are included in the collections of the National Gallery and the Sofia City Art Gallery, as well as in galleries and private collections across Europe and the United States. Adelina Fileva, Director of the Sofia City Art Gallery, describes the gallery’s relationship with the artist as creative, friendly and personal.
The opening of The Four Elements attracted a large audience of art enthusiasts and received extensive media coverage. Supporting the exhibition is part of Geotrading’s commitment to society and its ambition to contribute to initiatives that bring lasting value to Bulgarian culture and society.
The Four Elements is on view at the Sofia City Art Gallery, 1 Gurko Street, Sofia, until 8 November 2026.
