Over 2,100 trees and bushes planted by Our Green Tomorrow

03.12.2021

Over 2,100 young trees and bushes have been planted so far to gentrify the municipalities of Etropole, Mirkovo, Chavdar, Chelopech, Zlatitsa, Pirdop and Koprivshtitsa as part of the initiative Our Green Tomorrow, an element of the Bulgarian Virtues Charity Programme, to which Geotechmin OOD, Geotrading AD, Ellatzite-Med AD and Geostroy AD have been contributing by cash donations, as well as volunteer work.

In this year’s edition of the campaign, the most active participants were pupils and teachers from schools in all seven municipalities. Also joining in the initiative were mayors and members of the municipal administrations, as well as senior management members and employees of the partner companies. Apart from making the urban environment greener, more beautiful and diverse, the main goal of the campaign is for schoolchildren to acquire new skills in planting and growing saplings, and later, in harvesting their fruits. The initiative Our Green Tomorrow will wrap up in the town of Chelopech. 250 fine potted Christmas trees will be given out to the first 250 members of the public who sign up. The gift conifers will grace their homes, adding to the festive mood during the Christmas and New Year holidays, and come spring, will be planted on recultivated municipal land near the Sanctuary of St. George. In total, the campaign will result in over 2,350 newly planted trees and bushes.

As part of the Our Green Tomorrow campaign, the fifth graders at Sv. Kiril i Metodiy Primary School planted 36 fruit saplings – plum and apple trees – on the outskirts of town, thus creating their very own orchard. Each child placed a plate with their name on the tree they planted themselves, thus ‘adopting’ it for future care.

In the yard of the kindergarten of the town of Pirdop, pupils and teachers of the Todor Vlaykov Elementary School and the Savo Savov Secondary School planted plane, lime and ash trees. The students at the secondary school added four plane trees, two firs and a spruce to their schoolyard, while employees of the municipal administration planted coniferous and deciduous species in the town’s park and the spaces between apartment buildings. Tallying all up, the initiative has resulted in 70 newly planted trees and 200 bushes in Pirdop alone.

In the course of implementing Our Green Tomorrow, the town of Etropole received over 200 new trees and bushes in 2021. The start of the campaign was given at the town’s Memorial Park and spread to ten other locations in town, including the schoolyards of the Todor Peev Vocational High School and the Hristo Yasenov Secondary School. The town of Zlatitsa also turned greener, with a total of 240 new tree and bush saplings planted across it.

Over 1,000 saplings were planted at various locations in the village of Chavdar within the eponymous municipality. Newly planted saplings grace the schoolyards of the Georgi Benkovski Primary School in the village of Mirkovo and the Lyuben Karavelov Secondary School in the town of Koprivshtitsa.

The Our Green Tomorrow Program of GEOTECHMIN Group is a long-term effort focusing on the forestation and landscaping of municipal areas. The aim of the program is to increase the local biodiversity through greener and more beautiful surroundings, thus improving the quality of life in the towns and villages where the four companies operate. Last year more than 1,100 trees and bushes were planted as part of Our Green Future in the seven participating municipalities. The initiative is an element of the Bulgarian Virtues Charity Programme. Its foundation was laid in 2018 at the initiative of Prof. Tsolo Vutov, D.Eng.Sc., Managing Director of Geotechmin OOD.

Taking part in its implementation with volunteer work have been officers and members of the senior management of the participating companies like Dr. Ivan Vutov, D.Eng.Sc., Deputy Managing Director of Geotechmin OOD and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Geotrading AD; Eng. Kiril Iliev, CEO of Geotrading AD; Mr. Dominic Hamers, CEO of Geotechmin OOD, as well as members of the senior management of Ellatzite-Med AD.
